    DM controls mosquito breeding

    BY A STAFF REPORTER

The Pest Control Section of the Public Health Services Department of the Dubai Municipality (DM) organised an intensive campaign aimed at preventing mosquito breeding in Dubai.

The programme focused on two types of mosquito control methods, to reduce their breeding and to decrease the use of pesticides, according to a spokesperson.

Hisham Abdul Rahman Yahya, Head of the Pest Control Section, said, "We had, at first, adopted an anti-bacterial system by using bacterial cubes in large water pools to eliminate mosquitoes in the larva stage."

"The second part is the biological control method. In this method, some types of fish in large ponds and large formations of water feed on mosquito larvae," he added.

He said that mosquitoes breed in pools of stagnant water. Their breeding in homes could be reduced by preventing any leakage of tap water.

"Disposal of water leaking from the irrigation of ornamental plants, renewing animals' drinking water regularly, and disposing of accumulated water in old or damaged tires can also help prevent mosquito breeding," Yahya said.

According to him, sealing off the water wells and water tanks, getting rid of stagnant water in fountains and swimming pools, the disposal of water in drums and containers and disposal of water leaking from air-conditioners will also reduce mosquito breeding significantly.
