| Special Report: China diary: Astonishing ambition. BBC 08-02-27 GDP per capita in Shanghai over US$7,000
People's Daily, Feb. 8, 2007 - The per capita GDP in Shanghai is over US$7,000, according to a news conference held by the Information Office of Shanghai Municipal Government on February 7, 2007. Pan Jianxin, director general of the Shanghai Statistical Bureau, said at the conference that Shanghai's GDP per capita in 2006 was 57,310 yuan (US$7,189), according to the accounting methods used by the National Statistics Bureau, which take all permanent residents living in Shanghai for a minimum of half a year into consideration. According to international standards on statistics, GDP per capita in Shanghai in 2006 was 59,710 yuan (US$7,490), and takes into consideration all citizens living in Shanghai for a year or more. Nov.29, 2006 - Wang Zhaoyao, former deputy secretary of the Provincial Communist Party of China (CPC) Committee of east China's Anhui Province, went on trial on Wednesday. Wang is accused of taking bribes amounting to 7.04 million yuan (898,000 U.S. dollars) and failing to account for property worth 8.1 million yuan (1.02 million dollars). Wang also took advantage of his position to promote his wife and his wife's brothers to senior positions in local government departments. Xinhua News, Sep. 25, 2006 - Chen Liangyu (DOB 1946-10), secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of Communist Party of China, has been sacked for his involvement in a social security fund scandal. Chen was also suspended from the posts of member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and member of the CPC Central Committee, said a decision by the CPC Central Committee published on Monday. Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng has been appointed the acting secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the CPC by the CPC Central Committee. (Click for full report) China punishes 416 officials for commercial bribery
China Daily, July 31, 2006 - Beijing -- China has so far punished a total of 416 civil servants amid a national move against commercial bribery which began in the middle of last year, said a senior official with the leading group on anti-commercial bribery under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) here Monday. Among the officials, 49 are city-level and 367 county-level ones, said Li Yufu, deputy director of the leading group, at a news conference which is CPC's first ever to tell the public information on its latest fruits of combating commercial bribery. He said 1,603 cases were related to state workers, taking up to 23 percent of the total, with 508 million yuan (US$63.5 million) of illicit money involved. In comparison, Li said, China tackled 6,972 commercial bribery cases during the period, involving 1.963 billion yuan (about US$245 million).
